Liar-in-Chief: Obama Defends Drone Strikes, Claims No “Huge Civilian Casualties”
President Obama defended the clandestine CIA unmanned aerial drone program yesterday, fallaciously claiming that drone strikes haven’t caused a large number of civilian casualties.
The New York Times reports that the President’s remarks came in a Q and A session during a live web interview sponsored by Google Plus. A participant asked Obama about a New York Times article that appeared on Monday detailing the State Department’s use of drones to scan and protect U.S. diplomatic sites in Iraq. Such use of the unmanned aircraft has enraged Iraqis, whose newfound sovereignty being violated by the United States despite the official end of hostilities there.
The President confirmed that the U.S. is indeed using drones for surveillance purposes in Iraq and to combat al-Qaeda.
The U.S. has dramatically increased the use of drones since Obama took office. Not only are they deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. According to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, U.S. drone strikes have killed between 400 and 800 innocent civilians, including at least 175 children.
But Obama denied the high civilian death toll:
“I want to make sure the people understand actually drones have not caused a huge number of civilian casualties. For the most part, they have been very precise precision strikes against al-Qaeda and their affiliates. And we are very careful in terms of how it’s been applied. I think that there’s this perception somehow that we’re just sending in a whole bunch of strikes willy nilly; this is a targeted, focused effort at people who are on a list of active terrorists who are trying to go in and harm Americans, hit American facilities and American bases and so on. It is important for everybody to understand that this thing is kept on a very tight leash.”
Tell that to the surviving families of the hundreds of victims of U.S. drones.
