Jacob Burris, Arkansas Democrat Campaign Manager, Returns Home to Find Family Cat ‘Gato’ Slaughtered with “LIBERAL” Scrawled on Corpse

In a gruesome and unconscionable crime of animal cruelty, the family pet of an Arkansas Democratic operative was slaughtered and desecrated with a political message.

Jacob Burris is the campaign manager for Ken Aden, the Democratic challenger to Rep. Steve Womack (R) for Arkansas’ third congressional district seat. According to the Huffington Post and 5News, Burris and his children were  returning to their Russellville  home on Sunday when his five-year-old son came across a grisly scene. According to a press release issued by the Aden campaign:

“The family pet, an adult, mixed-breed Siamese cat, had one side of its head bashed in to the point the cat’s eyeball was barely hanging from its socket. The perpetrators scrawled ‘liberal’ across the cat’s body and left it on the doorstep of [Jacob] Burris’ house.”

“He said ‘daddy I think the cat’s dead,’ and I walked over there and that’s when I saw something on it,” Burris told 5News.

“Anybody that does that is just a coward,” he added.

Local police say they’re not sure whether or not the killing was meant to be a threat. But Burris has no doubt that it was.

“Absolutely,” he told The Huffington Post. “There’s a pretty strong fringe here, but it’s never really been personal like this.”

Aden, an Iraq war veteran, released a statement that read, in part:

“To kill a child’s pet is just unconscionable. As a former combat soldier, I’ve seen the best of humanity and the worst of humanity. Whoever did this is definitely part of the worst of humanity.”

Investigators don’t yet have any suspects. The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $2,500 reward for the arrest and conviction of whoever is guilty of the crime. Neither Rep. Womack or anyone working on his campaign is a suspect. In fact, Womack campaign manager Beau Walker strongly condemned the killing:

“The thought of brutalizing any animal to make a political statement, no matter what that statement is, is beyond any standard of decency,” he told the Huffington Post. “The person or people, if there was more than one, who are responsible — they definitely need to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. There should be no tolerance in our political discussion here in this nation for this kind of behavior.”
