Kelly Clarkson Endorses Ron Paul; Twitter Shitstorm Ensues

Grammy-award winning songstress and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson is taking heavy Twitter flak for endorsing libertarian Ron Paul for president.

Kelly ♥s Ron Paul.

According to the Huffington Post, the trouble began after the 29-year-old pop superstar tweeted her affection for Texas doctor-turned Congressman-turned GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul.

“I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance,” Clarkson tweeted yesterday.  “If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

Clarkson, who like Paul hails from the Lone Star State, is also a strong believer in limited government like Paul is. But apparently the singer is unaware of racist and homophobic newsletters sent out in Paul’s name in the 1980s and ’90s.

She sure is aware of them now. Here is a sampling of some of the angry tweets she received after endorsing Paul:

  • So you don’t believe there should be social programs to help the poor, or support for allies such as Israel? He thinks that. (@msschantz)
  • Seriously? Ron Paul! Gross. I thought you were progressive. Very disappointed. Might unfollow. (@JCourt3)
  • oh my god I’ve never been more disapointed I thought you were smarter wow #unfollow (@LoveUMore)

Clarkson now finds herself on the defensive, explaining her support for the highly controversial candidate. She says:

“I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women’s rights, men’s rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he’s my favorite.”

Clarkson claims she was unaware of any racist views espoused by Rep. Paul.

“I have never heard that he’s a racist? I definitely don’t agree with racism, that’s ignorant,” she tweeted.

And to another follower, she tweeted this: “I love all people and could care less if you like men or women. I have never heard that Ron Paul is a racist or homophobe?”

Clarkson also had a message to all the haters out there who attacked her for nothing more than the fact that they disagree with her endorsement:

“Man my eyes have been opened to so much hate tonight. If y’all ever disagree with something I say please don’t feel the need to attack me. I will listen to what you say and any articles or viewpoints you have when you say it with respect. Being hateful is not a healthy way to get people to see or hear you. I was raised to respect people and their decisions and beliefs and I hope you will grant me the same decency. If you don’t agree with me simply unfollow me. It’s really that easy. I hope you don’t because I would love the chance to hear what you have to say but if you’re so blinded by hate you can’t seek peace and progress then that is your unfortunate prerogative.”

Moral Low Ground definitely does not agree with Ms. Clarkson’s endorsement of Ron Paul, but she’s right on about the need for respectful debate in this country.
