Herman Cain Caught Joking about Anita Hill

November 11, 2011 by Brett Wilkins in Conservatives, Elections with 0 Comments

Moral Low Ground has, thus far, abstained from the media feeding frenzy over GOP front-runner Herman Cain’s sexual harassment allegations. We have chosen the moral high road, preferring to wait and see how the story unfolds. But despite his astounding imperviousness to the accusations of the four five women who have come forward with lurid tales of sexual impropriety, lately it seems as if Cain is hell-bent on blowing his shot at the nomination.

At Wednesday’s CNBC GOP debate, Cain referred to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as “Princess Nancy.” Not exactly a wise move for someone whose respect for women is under a microscope.

Not the end of the world, or of a campaign, you say? True. But hot on the heels of Cain’s sexist slur comes this doozy, courtesy of– believe it or not– Fox News. According to everyone’s favorite “Fair and Balanced” “news” channel, Cain was caught on video joking about Anita Hill, the woman vilified for accusing Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in 1991 while he was being confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. According to Hill, Thomas had boasted of his sexual prowess and “spoke about… such matters as women having sex with animals and films showing group sex or rape.”

Anyway, according to Fox News, Cain was making an appearance at a Michigan campaign event yesterday when a supporter asked him if he’d heard the latest news about Anita Hill. Much of the joke that followed is unintelligible, but whatever was said had Cain doubled over in hysterics. “Is she going to endorse me?” he then asked.

Cain, as usual, dismissed the joke as much ado about nothing. “It was a joke,” campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon explained to the New York Times. Cain was only “repeating what a supporter said.”

Cain filled in the blanks about exactly what that man said. “We walked into this room and someone said that – one of my supporters said, ‘Anita Hill was trying to contact you’ and my response was, ‘Is she going to endorse me?’” he told  Fred Dicker. “He said it in a humorous way. I gave a humorous response. It was in no way intended to be an insult to Anita Hill or anybody else.”

The only thing funny about all of this is the way in which Herman Cain keeps shooting himself in the foot. But he must be wearing bulletproof shoes, because nothing seems to harm him much. He’s even gloated about how his campaign coffers have swollen since the sexual harassment allegations against him began piling up like cheap toppings on a Godfather’s pizza.
