NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdul-Jalil: Sharia Law to Rule Libya

The chairman of Libya’s National Transitional Council has announced that the country will be ruled by Sharia law in the post-Gaddafi era.

The New York Daily News reports that NTC chairman Mustafa Abdul-Jalil has declared that Sharia, or Islamic, law will form the foundation of Libya’s legal system, and that current laws that are not compatible with the teachings of Islam will be nullified.

Speaking at a liberation celebration in Benghazi marking the end of eight months of civil war that culminated in the capture and unceremonious execution of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi, Abdul-Jalil proclaimed:  “We are now united. We have become brothers in love. This revolution was looked after by God to achieve victory.”

Abdul-Jalil said an interim government will be formed within a month, with parliamentary elections to follow. Additionally, Islamic banking, in which charging interest is prohibited, will be instituted.

U.S. President Barack Obama took the opportunity to give some friendly advice to the newly-liberated nation: “The Libyan authorities should also continue living up to their commitments to respect human rights, begin a national reconciliation process, secure weapons and dangerous materials, and bring together armed groups under a unified civilian leadership,” he said in a statement.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the new government to return Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi to British custody. Clinton promised to raise the issue with the NTC, saying: “We want to see him returned to prison, preferably in Scotland, where he was serving the sentence. But if not, elsewhere, because we thought it was a miscarriage of justice that he was released from the sentence that had been imposed for the ghastly bombing of Pan Am 103.”

Al-Megrahi, who was thought to be dying, was released from Scottish custody on compassionate grounds in August 2009, despite the fact that he was sentenced to life behind bars for his role in the 1988 bombing of Pan-Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, a terror attack that killed 270 people, including 189 Americans. His release infuriated many who lost family and friends on Flight 103.
