‘Douche du Jour’: GOP Rep. Peter King Says “We Can’t Allow” Media Coverage of ‘Occupy Wall Street’ Movement

Rep. Peter King (R-NY), best known for his shameful Islamophobic inquisition, has now openly expressed his disdain for freedom of the press, freedom of speech and the American tradition of dissent.

King, a guest on reactionary blowhard Laura Ingraham’s radio show Friday evening, slammed the fast-growing ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement as illegitimate and bemoaned the media coverage of the protests that have swept the nation.

“Somehow, elements of the media… are portraying [Occupy Wall Street] as a legitimate movement,” King lamented. “It’s really important for us not to give any legitimacy to these people in the streets… I remember what happened in the 1960s when the left-wing took to the streets and somehow the media glorified them and it ended up shaping policy. We can’t allow that to happen.

Earth to Peter King: if it weren’t for the protest movement of the 1960s, blacks and other minorities would not have won their hard-fought civil rights. Ditto for women and gays. The environment would have remained horrifically toxic. And who knows how much longer the immoral war against Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos would have continued. All of the progress of that momentous decade would have never occurred if history had unfolded as King wished.

Rep. King’s comments speak volumes about his contempt for dissent. And by suggesting that the media not give the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement any more coverage, he has demonstrated his utter disdain for press freedom and freedom of speech. Funny how conservatives like King love to wrap themselves in the flag, yet in telling moments of candor they reveal themselves to be thoroughly anti-American when it comes to people or movements they don’t like.

We’ll remember you, Rep. King, when it comes time to nominate our Douchebag of the Year. For now, you’ll have to be content with ‘winning’ Daily Douche honors.

Well d-hoy – why do you think he’s so SCARED that it might happen again? 🙂

Knowing Peter King, he’d say the 1% comes from him being part of…the Hell’s Angels!

Are you are assuming Peter King supports any of these rights?

Good point, sir – sadly, despite great strides in Americans’ attitudes, we’ve seen that many (and many in the Congress) are still stuck in the 1890’s when it comes to attitudes about equal rights and opportunities for all, workers’ rights, common-sense regulation, etc.

The title is very misleading. He didn’t say we must not allow media coverage, he said we can’t allow the protests to gain legitimacy. The “we” doesn’t refer to government, and the “can’t allow” doesn’t refer to choking off media coverage. Seriously, you should be embarrassed to pull this kind of misleading stuff.

King’s views on the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement have been made quite clear. There is nothing misleading here. King, and most conservatives, are working over time to portray this movement, which threatens their corporate masters, as something it is not– namely, a bunch of lazy, dirty, drug-addled, pointless hippies, kooks, and commies with nothing better to do than rage against the establishment. THIS is the TRUE misleading, as they never mention the doctors, lawyers, pilots, Nobel Prize winners (including in economics), world leaders and others who have marched with, applauded or endorsed this important and potentially game-changing movement.

OK, El Ronbo – why not suggest an alternative headline that in your opinion more accurately portrays King’s statements on Ingraham’s show.
