2 Shot, 1 Badly Beaten in Separate Attacks at 49ers- Raiders Pre-Season Game in San Francisco

A pre-season NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders at Candlestick Park in San Francisco was marred by widespread violence that included two separate shootings and one severe beating.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco police are seeking witnesses to Saturday night’s violence. Video footage of fights between fans of the two rival Bay Area teams are being studied as police search for suspects.

A 24-year-old man wearing a t-shirt that read “FUCK THE 49ERS” was shot several times in the stomach in the stadium parking lot after the game ended around 8pm. Another fan was shot in the face in a separate parking lot attack. And a man from San Rafael was knocked unconscious in a restroom during the game. The man in the t-shirt and the restroom beating victim are recovering in San Francisco General Hospital, where they are both listed in ‘serious’ condition.

There were many other lesser melees throughout and around the stadium, including some involving women and girls. Many were caught on video and posted on YouTube.

The violence reminded many of the brutal and nearly deadly attack on Bryan Stow, a San Francisco Giants fan, father of two and paramedic who was viciously assaulted in a parking lot outside of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on the opening day of the 2011 Major League Baseball season. Stow, who is still hospitalized more than four and a half months after his beating, is recovering in San Francisco and just days ago was able to mouth words and blow kisses to his family that brought them to tears.

Saturday’s violence was roundly condemned by the NFL, the 49ers, Raiders, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan.

“Violence will not be tolerated in either of our stadiums,” the two mayors said in a joint statement. “Fans come to our stadiums to enjoy an afternoon of football, not to be subjected to intimidation or violence.”

The mayors are promising to prosecute whoever was responsible for the reprehensible attacks to the fullest.
