Franciscan Friars Pray for God to Smite Bible Thief with “A Strong Bout of the Shits”

A group of Tuscan Franciscan friars outraged by the theft of two bibles from their Florentine church have prayed that ‘God’ strike the perpetrator with diarrhea.

According to the Guardian, a rare and expensive bible was stolen from the medieval church of San Salvatore al Monte, a favorite of Michelangelo. A pious parishioner generously replaced the pilfered holy book, but the monks were incensed when that one, too, was stolen.

The holy men responded to the thefts by posting a note in full view of the church’s worshippers. It said that the friars hoped the thief would see the error of his ways, but if he didn’t, “we pray to God that the thief is struck with a strong bout of the shits,” which, in turn, would “encourage him to carry out no further thefts.”

According to the Guardian, one of the friars said: “It is not exactly clean language, but we couldn’t put up with it any longer. The Lord and the faithful will understand.”

Perhaps more prayers should request that God smite, or even totally vanquish His enemies. Man doesn’t seem to be doing very well gainning the “high ground”.
