‘The Bachmann Blunders’: GOP Presidential Hopeful Says “Americans Fear the Rise of the Soviet Union”
Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann today asserted that Americans are concerned that President Barack Obama may slash military spending at a time when the Soviet Union is becoming a global power.
The only problem is, of course, that the Soviet Union disintegrated into the annals of history a generation ago and hasn’t been ‘on the rise’ since Bachmann was in college and Abba was all the rage.
Appearing on Jay Sekulow Live!, a Christian radio program, host Jay Sekulow queried the Minnesota congresswoman about what people she met on the campaign trail were concerned about.
“I would say it’s a unified message,” Bachmann replied. “It really is about jobs and the economy. That doesn’t mean people haven’t forgotten about protecting life and marriage and the sanctity of the family. People are very concerned about that as well.”
She added: “But what people recognize is that there’s a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward. And especially with this very bad debt ceiling bill, what we have done is given a favor to President Obama and the first thing he’ll whack is five hundred billion out of the military defense at a time when we’re fighting three wars. People recognize that.”
Bachmann forgot to mention the formidable military buildup of the scrappy East Germans and pesky Czechoslovakians, opening her to accusations that she is as weak on defense as she is on history.
Here’s an audio clip of Bachmann’s latest blunder:
