Obama Confronted by Tea Party Activist Ryan Rhodes at Iowa Town Hall Event
Battling all-time low approval ratings, President Barack Obama kicked off a mini-Palinesque three-states-in-three-days bus tour of the Midwest yesterday as part of his 2012 re-election bid.
The President’s first stop was Cannon Falls, Minnesota, where he declared: “I am here to enlist you in a fight!” “You’ve got to send a message to Washington that its time for the games to stop,” he continued, slamming his GOP rivals for their intransigence and failure to compromise on crucial economic issues facing the nation.
“I put a deal before the Speaker of the House John Boehner that would have solved this problem,” Obama said. “And he walked away because his belief was we can’t ask anything of millionaires and billionaires and big corporations in order to close our deficit.”
Obama carried his theme into Decorah, Iowa. “You’ve got to be willing to compromise to move the country forward,” he told an audience gathered for a town hall event.
But the President’s decision to get out among heartland voters may have backfired in Decorah, where Tea Party activist Ryan Rhodes confronted him after the event about whether or not Vice President Joe Biden compared lawmakers affiliated with the Tea Party to terrorists. Obama denied that Biden had called the legislators terrorists, and the conversation with Rhodes and a young female Tea Partier grew increasingly heated. Finally, Obama brushes Rhodes off with a condescending “you’re right, you’re right… thank you” and moves on to press palms with other attendees.
The President’s bus tour will continue on to Illinois, the last of the three states he will visit.
