‘Douche du Jour’: GOP Presidential Hopeful Michele Bachmann: ‘Gay Families are Not Families’

GOP presidential hopeful and rabid homophobe Michele Bachmann appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, where host David Gregory pressed her on her anti-gay views. Among the questions he asked her: “Can a gay couple who adopt children, in your mind, be considered a ‘family’?”

Her answer should come as no surprise: “When it comes to marriage, and family, my opinion is that marriage is between a man and a woman.”

Gregory then pressed her some more: “So a gay couple with kids would not be considered a ‘family’ to you?”

“You know,” the Minnesota congresswoman replied in an obvious attempt to deflect the question and change the subject, “all of these kind of questions really aren’t about what people are concerned about right now.”

Oh, but they are. Tens of millions of Americans are very much concerned about Bachmann’s unabashed bigotry toward sexual minorities. Take her remarks at the 2004 National Education Leadership Conference, for example:

“If you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair and personal enslavement. And that’s why this is so dangerous.

We need to have profound compassion for people who are dealing with the very real issue of sexual dysfunction in their life, and sexual identity disorders.”

Then there’s her pledge to re-instate ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ the recently repealed discriminatory ban on homosexuals serving openly in the U.S. military: “The ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy has worked very well,” she said. “I would be in consultation with our commanders but yes, I probably will [reinstate the policy].”

Not to mention her husband Marcus’ “gay cure” therapy offered in the Bachmann family clinics, or his assertion that homosexuals are “barbarians” who “need to be disciplined.”

Zack Ford of ThinkProgress writes:

“The 2010 Census shows that there are at least 13,718 same-sex couples living in Bachmann’s home state of Minnesota, and 2,372 of those couples report raising children. If those are not ‘families,’ it’s unclear what Bachmann thinks they might be.”

Sorry, Mrs. Bachmann, but yes, Americans are most definitely concerned about these kinds of questions. Hopefully, we won’t have to ask you them for very much longer…
