‘Douche du Jour’: Republican Congressman Doug Lamborn Calls President Obama “Tar Baby”

A Republican congressman has apologized after saying that being associated with President Obama is like “touching a tar baby.”According to, Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Republican representing Colorado’s über-conservative 5th congressional district, made the racist reference during a radio interview (click here to listen) on KZN-AM670 this morning. This is what he said:

“Even if some people say ‘well, the Republicans should have done this, or should have done that,’ they will hold the President responsible. Now, I don’t even want to be associated with him, it’s like touching a, a tar baby and you get it…you know you’re stuck and you’re part of the problem and you can’t get away. I don’t want that to happen to us, but if it does or not, he’ll still get , properly so, the blame because his policies for four years will have failed the American people.”

“Tar baby,” of course, is a racist term used to refer to black people. According to Raw Story, it was popularized in one of Joel Chandler Harris’ Uncle Remus stories. Politicians have unwisely used the term before, notably Republicans John McCain and Mitt Romney– although neither of those men used it in reference to a person.

When the national media got wind of Lamborn’s racist gaffe, the congressman sent President Obama a letter of apology. His office also issued this statement:

Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) today sent a personal letter to President Barack Obama apologizing for using a term some find insensitive. Lamborn was attempting to tell a radio audience last week that the President’s policies have created an economic quagmire for the nation and are responsible for the dismal economic conditions our country faces. He regrets that he chose the phrase “tar baby,” rather than the word “quagmire.” The Congressman is confident that the President will accept his heartfelt apology.

“Some” find insensitive? Seems like Rep. Lamborn still doesn’t get it. And that’s why he’s our Daily Douche.
