Democratic Congressman David Wu to Resign over Allegation of “Aggressive, Unwanted” Sex with Teenager
Rep. David Wu (D-OR) announced Tuesday that he would resign from Congress amid allegations of sexual misconduct with a young woman.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Wu, the first Chinese-American to serve in the House of Representatives, said he will step down “upon the resolution of the debt-celing crisis.”
“I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fighting these very serious allegations,” a statement from Wu read. “The well-being of my children must come before anything else.”
He called serving in Congress “the greatest privilege of my life.”
Wu stands accused of an “aggressive and unwanted” sexual encounter with the 18-year-old daughter of a longtime friend and campaign donor last Thanksgiving. According to USA Today, Wu did not deny the encounter but claims he did “nothing illegal” and predicts he will be “vindicated.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has called for a formal ethics probe of the seven-term Congressman.
Earlier this year, Wu admitted he was seeking help for mental health problems.
Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber (D) will now need to call a special election to choose Wu’s replacement.
