Myk Likhov: Re-thinking Education (Educational Deviance)
Ran across a fascinating website, Uncollege. Reading through it, Uncollege turns out to be a very well thought-out movement promoting educational deviance (I love that). It challenges the notion that traditional education is the only path to success, and encourages young people to consider a real-world path to their education. Given that I have degrees from 2 pretty shiny higher learning institutions, I have a valid perspective on this. And I happen to agree.
In the past 3 months, two very astute people have opened me up to this thinking. Peter Thiel, the Founder of PayPal and early investor in Facebook, told us during Summit at Sea about the Thiel Fellowship, where 20 college students under the age of 20 will receive $100,000 to drop out of college and start a business. He’s betting against traditional education (Economist article). Seth Godin too, wrote an article entitled The Coming Melt-Down in Higher Education.
This is a real movement.
Check out all those links you might find them fascinating. And to top it off, an old mentor of mine, Brian Johnson, is starting a university called En*theos Academy for Optimal Living. His approach and curriculum puts amazing to shame check out the video:
