Stacy Schuler, Ohio High School Gym Teacher who had Sex with Five Students, Pleads ‘Insanity’

A former Ohio high school physical education teacher who will stand trial for having sex and giving alcohol to five students has pleaded insanity, reports.

Thirty-three-year-old Stacy Schuler, who faces 19 charges of sexual battery and providing alcohol to minors, changed her plea from ‘not guilty’ to ‘not guilty by reason of insanity.’ It is a highly unusual move that rarely works, according to legal experts.

According to the Dayton Daily News, Schuler allegedly had sex with five different students, most of them football players, from Mason High School where she worked as a health and physical education teacher as well as an athletic trainer for boys and girls sports teams before being fired over the scandal.

On her Health Education Philosophy statement that was part of her application to work at Mason, Schuler wrote of her desire to teach teens about “sexual behaviors that result in… STDs and unwanted pregnancies.”

“Today’s society has its own standards of behavior, values, and norms that do not necessarily reflect healthy living,” she wrote. “How can a child who is sexually active as a teenager learn about STDs and how to prevent unwanted pregnancies?”

Schuler, who is single, turned herself into authorities in February and was released from custody shortly thereafter under the condition that she wear a GPS monitoring device and promise to appear in court.

Legal experts say the insanity defense, which is used by only around 2% of defendants and succeeds only around 1/3 of the time, is a risky move. Under Ohio law, Schuler’s lawyer, Charlie H. Rittgers, must now demonstrate by a preponderance of the evidence that she suffered a mental problem severe enough to cloud her ability to discern between right and wrong. She will most likely have to undergo multiple mental evaluations as well.

Schuler’s trial is scheduled to begin August 8.

Maybe it is time to consider physical punishment like caning as they do in singapore. Yes it would leave scars but if you believe that her conduct scarred the victims , such punishment would only be fair.

ummm…”scarred”? I would love to have been “scarred” like that at 16. This statutory rape thing is truly bogus and a waste of time and resources in the legal and justice systems while making a mockery of “justice” since it is between consenting adults. The women should be fired and never allowed to work with minors, but that is about it.
