JaMichael Brown, 16-Pound Baby Boy, Born in Texas
Everything’s bigger in Texas, the old saying goes, and a newborn baby boy certainly lives up to those words. According to CBS news, JaMichael Brown was born yesterday in Longview. The not-so-little guy weighed in at a whopping 16 pounds, one ounce (7.28 kg), making him one of the largest babies ever born.
Janet Johnson, his mother, suffers from gestational diabetes, so she knew her baby would be big. But no one could have predicted this. “When they pulled the baby out, they could tell that he was huge,” Johnson told KYTX. “And then they weighed him.”
The average weight of a newborn infant is around seven and a half pounds (3.4 kg). JaMichael may be the largest baby ever born in Texas. Amazingly, he’s not even close to the record books, though. CBS reports that Canadian Anna Bates, born weighing a staggering 23 pounds, 12 ounces (10.77 kg) in 1879, holds that title. More recently, an Indonesian woman gave birth to a 19.2 (8.71 kg) child.
As for baby JaMichael, he’s now in the neonatal intensive care unit where he is getting help breathing and eating.
“It’s a beautiful baby, but for health reasons we’d rather not see a baby this large. They can have a little harder time maintaining their blood sugar,” nurse Mary Beth Smith, who helped deliver the baby, told KYTX.
