‘Douche du Jour’: Australian Gynecologist Graeme Reeves Imprisoned for Mutilating Patient’s Genitals
A former Australian gynecologist has been sentenced to three and a half years behind bars for mutilating a patient’s genitals, assaulting two other patients and practicing obstetrics without a license.
According to the Associated Press, Dr. Graeme Reeves, age 60, was sentenced in the New South Wales District Court today. He was found guilty of assaulting two patients during pelvic examinations at his Bega clinic in 2002 and 2003. Judge Greg Woods found him not guilty on charges of assaulting three other patients.
Reeves has already been found guilty of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm to another patient after he removed her clitoris during surgery. He never told the patient he intended to remove her clitoris; she was undergoing surgery to remove a lesion on her labia.
Reeve’s attorney had argued that he was trying to save the woman’s life by stopping the spread of the cancer from the lesion; that lesion was actually benign.
The doctor also pleaded guilty to obtaining money through deception by providing obstetric care despite a 1997 ban on him practicing. That ban was the result of nine patient complaints and an official finding of unsatisfactory professional conduct.
Reeves, who suffers from clinical depression and personality disorder, will spent at least two years behind bars.
In addition to imprisonment, he is banned from ever practicing medicine or contacting patients.
The woman whose clitoris Reeves removed told the Associated Press that she thinks his sentence is too lenient.
“My sentence is for life,” she said. “Never did I consider for one second he was going to do what he did.”
