Michele Bachmann Says she has the ‘Spirit’ of a Serial Killer
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) appeared in Waterloo, Iowa today , where she formally announced her candidacy for President. The location was significant for more than the obvious reasons having to do with the Iowa caucuses; Bachmann was born and grew up in Waterloo. She should’ve known better than to say what she said before her official announcement, but apparently she didn’t. The darling of Tea Partiers and fundamentalist Christians committed another one of her many verbal gaffes when inadvertenly speaking about Waterloo’s most (in)famous native son:
“Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That’s the kind of spirit that I have, too,” she told Fox News prior to her big announcement. Yes, John Wayne, he of silver screen immortality, was from Iowa. But as the conservative Washington Times points out, the legendary Duke was from Winterset, three hours’ drive from Waterloo.
There was, however, another John Wayne, and he did hail from Waterloo. I’m talking about John Wayne Gacy, the notorious “Killer Clown” serial murderer who raped and slaughtered 33 teenage boys and young men in the 1970s before being caught, convicted and executed in 1994.
Some spirit to have, Michele!
Of course, Bachmann did not mean to imply that she shared any spiritual kinship with a brutal serial killer. But like I said, being from Waterloo and all, and from around the same time as Gacy was doing his thing, she ought to have known better.
But this is Michele Bachmann we’re talking about, a woman who’s committed more verbal blunders (and outright lies) than just about any other politician on the national stage today. I’m not just saying that– non-partisan Politifact, which tracks the veracity of politicians’ words, actually named Bachmann America’s least credible politician.
But that shouldn’t matter much to her core constituency, a fact-phobic lot who don’t place much stock in readin’, writin’, science or truth. As for the rest of us, we can only watch with a combination of amusement and horror as another fundamentalist jumps into the fray of the Republican presidential race. But perhaps even more horrifying than the likes of Michele Bachman, Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum or Herman Cain is the thought that one of these right-wing reactionaries could actually defeat Barack Obama in 2012!
