Idaho Senate Republican Leader John McGee Arrested for D.U.I., Felony Grand Theft Auto
John McGee, the Idaho Senate Republican Caucus Chairman, was arrested early Sunday morning after he “borrowed” an SUV while drunk and fell asleep in it after getting stuck in the yard of a Boise home.
According to Raw Story and Fox News, McGee was drinking on a golf course late Saturday night and decided to leave on foot. He came across a Ford Excursion SUV with a cargo trailer hitched to it at the home of a complete stranger. The doors were unlocked and the key was in the ignition, not uncommon in that area, and McGee got the notion to appropriate the vehicle.
He didn’t get far– the truck and trailer got stuck in a yard down the street and McGee left it, walking incoherently up and down the street at 3am, covered in cuts and scrapes, mumbling about “promised land.” He eventually got back in the SUV and fell asleep.
Police arrived and determined that McGee’s blood alcohol level was 0.15%, nearly twice the legal limit.
The prominent state senator, named 2006 Idaho Young Republican of the Year and Republican Legislator of the Year, and often mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate, was arrested and booked into the Ada County Jail on suspicion of felony grand theft and misdemeanor driving under the influence.
“He is embarrassed by this matter,” attorney Scott McKay told Fox News. “He has never been in this situation before, but he has great confidence in the criminal justice system. With the love and support of his family, he will handle this matter responsibly.”
