U.S. Sex Census Finds High Levels of Sexual Satisfaction

June 16, 2011 by Brett Wilkins in Sex with 0 Comments

A new national “sex census” sponsored by Trojan condoms has found a high level of sexual satisfaction among American adults. The census, based on two studies conducted by the StrategyOne public opinion research company and an online study, surveyed 1,000 adults for ten minutes about numerous aspects of their sex lives.

“We took the 2010 US census a step beyond the demographic landscape,” said Bruce Tetreault, group manager of Trojan sexual health products. They sure did. Here are some of the census’ findings:

Sexual Frequency: The average US adult has sex 120 times a year. That’s 2.3 times per week. People in the Northeast have the most sex, averaging 130 times a year. Midwesterners were next, at 125 times a year, followed by the West (120) and the South (114 times). As far as cities go, people in Los Angeles have the most sex (135 times/year), followed by Houston (125 times/year). Residents of Dallas (99 times/year) and Philadelphia (104) have the least sex.

Sexual Satisfaction: On the whole, Americans are very satisfied with their sex lives. Fully 76% are satisfied, although 63% wish they were having more sex than they are. And despite their relatively low love-making frequency, Philadelphians enjoyed sex the most, with 82% of adults in the City of Brotherly Love reporting satisfaction with their sex lives. New Yorkers were next, with 81% satisfied, followed closely by Atlanta (80%). At the other end of the spectrum, San Franciscans are the least happy in bed, with 70% satisfaction.

Sexy Places: Speaking of beds, “someone else’s bed” was the second-most common place Americans said was the most exciting place they’d ever knocked boots. Yawn! The first choice for dream sex spot was just as vanilla– in a car (48%). As far as fantasy fucks, 33% of men said they’d like to join the “mile high club,” while 26% of women said they’d like to make the two-backed beast on a beach or in the sea.

Sexy Positions: Again, Americans proved shockingly traditional, with 45% of women and 27% of men naming missionary as their favorite coital position. Doggy-style was runner up with the fellas (24%); reverse-missionary came in second with the ladies (13%).

Sex & Marriage: Married couples reported higher levels of sexual satisfaction than singles (82% to 71%), but singles have sex more often (130 times a year to 109).

Sex & The Sexes: American men are much more willing to experiment than their female counterparts (83% to 65%), and 31% of US men describe themselves as sexually liberal, versus 16% of women. Fully 50% of American men enjoy oral and penetrative sex equally, compared to 32% of women. When asked if they wanted more sex, unsurprisingly 71% of men answered affirmatively. Only 55% of females said “yes.” On “hooking up,” or having sex with someone outside of a relationship, 40% of women said they were against it. Surprisingly, 22% of men also scorn hookups.

Social Sex: Nearly one in five (19%) of Americans have “sexted” and the same percentage have had “cybersex.” Eighteen percent have had sex with someone they met online. One in ten have discussed sex on Facebook and/or Twitter.
