Republican Presidential Candidate Herman Cain: Homosexuality is a “Sin and a Choice”
Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO and current Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain appeared on CBS News yesterday, telling interviewer Brian Montopoli that he believes homosexuality is a sin and a choice.
“I believe homosexuality is a sin because I’m a Bible-believing Christian, I believe it’s a sin,” Cain said. “But I know that some people make that choice. That’s their choice.”
To be certain that he heard correctly, Montopoli asked “So you believe it’s a choice?”
“I believe it is a choice,” Cain said.
Homosexuality is not a choice, as anyone in the scientific or medical community will tell you if you’re ignorant enough to need telling, but homophobia most certainly is. I cannot tell you whether or not Cain really believes the garbage he says, but if he’s trying to throw red meat to his conservative base he’d better think twice. Recent studies show that most Americans finally think its okay to be gay, and Cain’s overt ignorance and bigotry will certainly cost him the votes of countless moderates who are fed up with hatred and discrimination.
It is telling, however, that while 79% of Americans with no religious affiliation accept homosexuality, only 29% of evangelical Christians do. When Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church infamy shrieks about God hating fags, he’s actually right. God does hate fags; it takes no more than a cursory glance at the pertinent Biblical passages to confirm this:
If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. (Leviticus 18:22)
It doesn’t get any clearer than that.
But back to Cain. One can only hope that one, or more than one, of his three grandchildren grow up to become raging bull dykes or fierce, fabulous queens. That seems to have worked for the Cheneys. For it isn’t until Bible-blinded fundamentalist Christ cultists like Cain are forced to confront the issue of homosexuality in their own families that many of them come to their senses and realize that gay, lesbian and transsexual people are born that way.
Cain ought to be better than this. As a black child growing up in Jim Crow Georgia, he experienced the racism of segregation first-hand. He rode in the back of buses and drank from “negroes-only” water fountains. But now, here he is, espousing the same sort of discrimination against LGBT Americans as he himself suffered through.
Perhaps as disturbing as Cain’s homophobic ignorance is his staunch belief in fairy tales. For what else is the Bible but a collection of myths, fantasies and fables? Even the life of Jesus Christ and the existence of the so-called “Holy Spirit” must be called into question, but to do so as a fundamentalist Christ cultist is a one-way ticket to eternal infernal damnation.
But this sort of laughably moronic nonsense is what the lives of tens of millions of Americans revolve around. Many of them will be drawn to Cain, even if he is black, because of his fundamentalist social beliefs. To legions of rabid evangelicals, it’s not the $14,000,000,000,000 national debt, the wars of imperial aggression, or even the languishing economy that tops their list of national priorities. No, the Christ cultists are more concerned about issues like gay marriage, abortion, gun rights, abstinence, school prayer and walling off the southern border from the unwashed Mexican hordes– issues that fundamentalists like Cain and their backers at Fox News use to skillfully manipulate the largely uneducated, largely Christ-stricken “real Americans” who pledge their undying allegiance to them.
