‘The Moral High Ground’– Mitt Romney Reaffirms his Belief in Man-Made Global Warming

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has once again taken the bold step of reaffirming his belief in anthropogenic climate change. Bold, because the vast majority of conservatives publicly doubt or deny the overwhelming global scientific evidence and consensus that man-made global warming is indeed very real and threatening the very future of life as we know it on earth.

Not only has Romney taken the highly controversial (at least in reactionary circles) stance that global warming is real, he’s also proposed action to reduce Americans’ carbon footprint.

“I believe the world is getting warmer, and I believe humans have contributed to that,” Romney laudably declared at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire. “It’s important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases that may be significant contributors.”

While governor of Massachusetts, Romney even actively advocated fighting climate change under the logical premise that curbing greenhouse gas emissions was just plain good for the citizens of his state whether or not global warming was actually occurring.

“The same policies that protect the climate also promote energy efficiency, smart business practices, and improve the environment in which our citizens live and work,” he wisely opined in 2004.

Bravo, Mitt. Spoken like a true progressive. Or anyone who’s paid attention to climate science over the last couple of decades.

Still, such commendable honesty can only hurt Romney among the less enlightened masses who make up a hefty chunk of the Republican base. It’s bad enough that Romney is going to take endless flak for his attempt to provide affordable health care to all Massachusetts residents and for being a Mormon. Now he’ll have to fight the ignorance, buoyed by self-interested corporations, of most conservatives who believe global warming is a hoax of monumental proportions.

And some hoax it must be, with the following list being just a partial roll call of scientific bodies around the world that agree man-made climate change is real and an imminent threat to the survival of life as we know it on earth:

– The National Science Academies of:  Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, China, France, Ghana, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, India, Japan, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

… as well as: the American Meteorological Society, the Royal Meteorological Society (UK), the World Meteorological Organization, the American Medical Association, the World Health Organization, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the American Geological Institute, NASA, the European Space Agency… and countless hundreds of others.

But ask any conservative and they’ll tell you… global warming is all bullshit. Bad science. A hoax.

Don’t these people have children and grandchildren?
