Carey Hal Dyess, Age 73, Kills at least 5 in Arizona Shooting Rampage
An elderly man went on a deadly shooting rampage today in Yuma, Arizona, killing five people before turning his gun on himself.
One of those killed was attorney Jerrold Shelley, who had represented Dyess’ ex-wife in the couple’s 2006 divorce– Dyess’ fifth. Shelley was packing up his office on his last day at work when he was shot dead by Dyess.
According to Yuma County Sheriff Ralph Ogden, the first shooting occurred just after 5am in the town of Wellton, some 25 miles east of Yuma. That woman survived and is in critical condition in a Phoenix hospital.
Dyess then drove around Yuma and killed four people before arriving at Shelley’s office around 9:20 am. Dyess is then believed to have driven back towards Wellton. He pulled over and fatally shot himself; his body was found in his vehicle at 10:47 am.
Al Krieger, mayor of the city of around 200,000 people on the border with California and Mexico, said “It’s one of those things where someone went and did something very, very foolish,” Krieger said. “I’m sorry for the loss of life.”
