‘Douche du Jour’: Texas Teacher Suspended over bin Laden Comment to Muslim Student

A high school algebra teacher in metropolitan Houston has been placed on administrative leave after making a degrading comment to a Muslim student about the death of Osama bin Laden, KTRK reports.

The unidentified teacher at Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas told the student, a freshman who wishes to remain unidentified out of embarrassment and fear of retaliation, “I bet you’re grieving.” When she asked her teacher what he was talking about, he said “I heard about your uncle’s death.” The Muslim student then knew the teacher was referring to Osama bin Laden.

The highly insensitive comments brought the girl to tears, but the teacher allegedly smirked, giggled and walked away.

The student, an American-born Muslim, complained to an adult and the school’s principal notified her parents. The Clear Creek school district quickly took action, suspending the teacher and issuing a statement:

“In the Clear Creek Independent School District, we believe diversity strengthens our community and seek opportunities to celebrate the different cultures within our schools and neighborhoods. The sentiments allegedly shared by this teacher are not reflective of the staff at Clear Brook High School or anyone within the Clear Creek Independent School District. In accordance with CCISD policy, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a personnel investigation.”

Dr. Aziz Siddiqui of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston said the school reacted properly and that no further action was necessary. “A lot of people are ignorant in the world, and so you just have to ignore them,” he told KTRK.

The student’s mother showed KTRK a text her daughter sent her regarding the incident:

“Make it a lesson learned about how the world is going through stuff and he [the teacher] needs to watch what he says and so do others because Osama does not represent the whole Muslim faith.”

That should go without saying, but they’ve got a whole lot to learn about the world deep in the heart of Texas.
