Was Osama bin Laden Captured Alive Before U.S. Navy Seals Killed Him?
Pakistani security officials have told Britain’s Channel 4 News that Osama bin Laden was captured alive before being shot dead by US military forces in his fortified compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Channel 4 is also reporting that bin Laden’s daughter claims her father was taken alive and shot in the head during the first few minutes of the raid on the compound.
This shocking new allegation comes as the Obama administration has changed its story on some key details regarding bin Laden’s final living moments. White House spokesman Jay Carney now says that the al-Qaeda chief was not armed and did not take part in the firefight with US forces, as initially reported. He did, however, resist before being shot. It was also originally reported that bin Laden’s wife, whom he allegedly used as a human shield, was shot dead in the raid. She was not used as a shield and she was not killed, but Carney said she was shot in the leg as she “rushed the US assaulter.”
The Times of India reports that White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan had hoped to capture bin Laden alive. “If we had the opportunity to take bin Laden alive, if he didn’t present any threat, the individuals involved were able and prepared to do that. We had discussed that extensively in a number of meetings in the White House and with the President,” he said. “The concern was that bin Laden would oppose any type of capture operation. Indeed, he did. He, therefore, was killed in that firefight.”
But CIA director Leon Panetta told CBS News that “we always assumed from the beginning that the likelihood was that he was going to be killed.”
