Whenever posting police beating videos, the author must usually be careful to point out that what you see in the video might not provide a full contextual backdrop explaining the circumstances that led to the shocking acts depicted in it. If this sounds like something resembling a disclaimer, perhaps it is.

From viewing this video, in which a woman and a police officer come to fisticuffs in an Atlanta International House of Pancakes restaurant in the wee hours of the morning last Sunday, it’s impossible to say what sparked the breakfast brawl. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Cynthia Freeman, who was arrested following the fracas, said she and some friend were having “a regular night out, going to get something to eat,” when a man in a blue shirt approached their table and told the women to “shut up” and “leave.”

It turns out the man was an off-duty cop. “He just attacked me,” Freeman told the Journal-Constitution. “And I said, ‘What did I do? What did I do? I didn’t do anything.”

The video begins with a uniformed police officer reaching across a table towards a woman when another woman in a black dress grabs his shoulder. The officer then slaps the woman in the face, she throws some punches his way (which mostly miss their mark), then he full-on decks her in the jaw, sending her staggering. The officer then tackles her to the floor where she is handcuffed and arrested.

Neither the officer nor the woman in the black dress have been identified, but the Atlanta Police Department says he’s been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation.

Cynthia Freeman and Ashley Leavell, who was also punched by the officer, were arrested and charged with obstruction of justice, simple battery and, in Leavell’s case, public drunkenness. Freeman’s friend Roberta Caban was also arrested.

“No one would tell us why we were arrested,” Caban said. “No one would tell us anything. And we wind up spending over 24 hours in jail.”
