Transgender Woman Brutally Beaten in Baltimore McDonald’s Speaks Out
A graphic video of a transgendered woman being pulled from a McDonald’s bathroom and brutally beaten by two young women while restaurant employees, one of whom filmed the video, look on and laugh has gone viral. The video, filmed in Baltimore, Maryland on April 18 by employee Vernon Hackett, shows Chrissy Lee Polis, age 22, being kicked, dragged across the floor by her hair, and punched in the face until she suffers a seizure. It’s not pretty stuff. Worse, instead of helping her, McDonald’s employees are either filming the vicious attack, cheering the assailants on, laughing, or all of the above.
According to SF Weekly, Hackett justified the attack, saying the “man was dressed as a woman.”
The details of what led to the assault are somewhat murky. Polis said she went into the McDonald’s because she “really needed to use the bathroom.” But an altercation ensued when a young woman, Teonna Monae Brown, got angry at Polis because she thought she was talking to her boyfriend. “The other girl came up and spit in my face,” Polis recalled. “They started ripping my hair, throwing me on the floor, and kicking me in the face” while “everybody sat there in that McDonald’s and watched me get hurt. And nobody did nothing at all. Nobody.”
Brown was joined in the attack by another young woman; a girl, really, whose name cannot be released because she is just 14 years old. The women snatched Polis’ cell phone from her so she couldn’t call for help. “Every time I walked away they followed me,” she lamented.
According to ABC News, Polis, who is epileptic, appears to have a seizure during the attack.
Eventually, a customer steps in to aid Polis and then an employee helps stop the attack. One employee warns the assailants “Y’all need to get out of here, the police are coming!”
When Baltimore police arrived on the scene they arrested Brown and the younger girl. Brown, age 18, is in jail, charged with felony assault. The 14-year-old also faces assault charges. Both may also be charged with committing a hate crime.
McDonald’s has fired Hackett for shooting the video and laughing at the assault, and the company is considering disciplinary action against other employees who were working at the time. In a statement, McDonald’s said “there’s no room for violence under the golden arches, and we strongly condemn this brutal assault. First and foremost, our thoughts are with Chrissy as she recovers. The crew member who videotaped the assault is no longer employed. Our franchisee is also closely examining the behavior of other employees.”
Polis told ABC News that she’s afraid to leave her home, but she would like to thank the customer who came to her rescue. “I do want to thank her in person face to face,” she said. “I do want to thank her because I feel like that’s the right thing she did, they would have kept on continuing hurting me even more.”
