Conservative Group Warns Gays Will “Skip Hand in Hand to Adoption Agencies to Demand a Boy for Themselves”

It’s absolutely amazing to me that in this day in age, in a country that claims to cherish freedom above all else, that entire groups of people exist in order to deny other groups of people their civil rights. Such is the pathetic existence of Eugene Delgaudio, a rabidly homophobic local politician in Virginia who also heads the reactionary group Public Advocate of the United States.

This sad group of bigots, hiding behind the predictable screen of “family values,” has just implied that gay men are child rapists in an email to supporters soliciting donations to fight against a revision to Virginia’s adoption rules that would prohibit delaying or denying someone the right to adopt children based on race, gender, sexual orientation or religion.

“The thought of it sickens the soul,” wrote Delgaudio. “Practicing Homosexuals skipping hand in hand down to adoption agencies to demand a boy for themselves.”

Conservatives, of course, want Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, a Republican, to reject the revision, even thought it would not change the fact that unmarried couples cannot adopt children in Virginia, and same sex couples cannot legally marry there. So this is really just an exercise in pure hate, just as the push to revise the state’s adoption rules is meaningless to same-sex couples.

If Virginians were really concerned about keeping their children safe from sexual predators, they would do well to keep them away from Christian clergy. Just yesterday, we reported on the soaring allegations of kiddie rape by Catholic clergy. A child is far more likely to be gay-raped in church than by his two daddies. That’s a fact.

Until these couples are afforded their full civil rights– and that includes the fundamental right to marry who they love and adopt children, Virginia will continue to suffer from an acute liberty deficit. It was Virginia, some 45 years ago, that furiously fought to keep interracial couples from marrying each other. But just as the 1967 US Supreme Court ruling Loving v. Virginia declared such blatant discrimination unconstitutional, so too will the appalling prohibition against same-sex couples marrying and adopting children one day be relegated to the historical hall of shame where it belongs.

RELATED: Last week, the Arkansas Supreme Court struck down a law that banned same-sex couples from adopting or fostering children. The law had actually been enacted by voters in a 2008 ballot initiative.

No it is not a fact. The statistical fact (not reported in liberal media) is homosexuals sexually abuse boys more often (relative to their small percentage of the population)than heterosexuals do.

Adoption should be about the best interests of the child. Not the wants of homosexuals.

he is full of non-facts. the best interests of the child is a mom and a dad. it’s called heteronormativity because it is the normal thing. bringing children up in an abnormal environment is never good.

What is “normal?” In San Francisco, where I live, there are thousands of same-sex families. And while I don’t have the scientific data to back it up right now, I’d be willing to bet $100 of my own money that, on average, children of such families perform better in school, suffer from less child abuse, and will go on to greater achievements than those of the average kid from a “traditional” family. I’d even bet $1,000, if I had it! Of course, much of this has to do with the fact that the kid is growing up in the environment of San Fransisco, the most educated, 2nd highest income earning city in the US, and not specifically because the child has 2 moms or 2 dads (or even only 1 mom or 1 dad). You may be surprised to learn that our city actually ENCOURAGES same-sex couples to adopt. So that brings us once again to the question: what is “normal?” Here, it is far more normal for 2 men to adopt a child than it is for, say, someone to be a Christian fundamentalist or a Republican.
