U.S. Catholic Church Report: Clergy Child Rape Accusations Soared in 2010
The Roman Catholic Church in the United States issued its annual report on sexual abuse allegations on Monday; this year’s report says allegations of sexual abuse involving clergy have soared, Agence France-Presse reports. According to the report, the number of alleged sex abuse incidents rose from around 400 in 2009 to nearly 700 last year. Most of those– 653, to be exact– involve alleged incidents that occurred decades ago. Many victims of clergy sex abuse “are just now finding the courage to report” it, the report says.
The report also noted that payouts to victims rose by about 20%, from $104 million in 2009 to $124 million last year.
The vast majority of allegations– 574– were against priests. Nearly half of those priests are now dead. There are 275 priests in the report who had previously been accused of sexual abuse.
The majority of victims were between the ages of 10 and 14 when the alleged abuse began, with one out of five victims under the age of 10.
Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, disgustingly attempted to justify the church’s child rape epidemic in the 1960s, 70s and 80s with a full-page ad in the New York Times. The ad argues that the time period when the bulk of the abuse took place coincided with the “heyday of the sexual revolution.”
There’s one big problem with this, aside from the obvious supposition that children ought never to be raped, and that is the fact that priests are supposed to be celibate regardless of which direction the prevailing cultural and sexual winds are blowing.
That’s not the end of it– Donohue also tried to deflect fury over the legions of child-raping priests by pointing to sexual abuse in secular schools and among the Orthodox Jewish community. He even had the gall to assert that since “more than three-quarters of the victims were post-pubescent… the abuse did not meet the clinical definition of pedophilia.”
Worst of all, the ad claims that many of the victims of predatory pedophile priests were not rape or molestation victims, but rather homosexual participants.
