How Much of YOUR Taxes are Paying for War?

“Taxes,” said Franklin Delano Roosevelt, “are dues that we pay for the privileges of membership in an organized society.” Yes, but they’re also the dues we pay to fight wars in no less than– count ’em– four different countries, and to maintain more than 1,000 overseas military bases.

Robert Greenwald points out that 27.4% of our income tax will go to pay for the war in Afghanistan and other related expenses. With annual Pentagon budgets currently hovering around $700,000,000,000– equal to the GDP of Switzerland and Israel combined, that’s not so incredibly hard to believe.

Greenwald says it will cost us taxpayers $1 million for each American soldier in Afghanistan this year. Total expenditure on that war, which at nine-plus years is already the longest in the history of the United States, will once again exceed $100,000,000,000 this year. With CIA Director Leon Panetta estimating there are no more than 100 al-Qaeda members in all of Afghanistan, that’s $1 billion we’re spending — I say “we” because it is ultimately you and I who are paying for it with our taxes– on each “terrorist” in a losing war effort that 60% of the American people oppose. There’s got to be a better– and more cost effective– way to fight terrorism!

As you sit down to write that check to the IRS this week, check out this new Afghanistan War Tax Calculator from Rethink Afghanistan and see how much of YOUR income is being spent on the losing war in Afghanistan. Who knows? Maybe some of your hard-earned money even paid for bullets and bombs that slaughtered innocent Afghan children?

Thank God the deficit hawks of the GOP are all over the Pentagon budget … wait … never mind, they’re after NPR and Planned Parenthood instead. My bad.

Yes… haven’t you heard from Mike Huckabee that abortion is the number one threat to America today? And from Senator Jon Kyl that 90% of Planned Parenthood’s business is abortions? (Actually the real number is 3%, but who’s counting?)
