‘Douche du Jour’: Texas Cop Pepper Sprays Baby Squirrel

A YouTube video of a police officer pepper spraying a baby squirrel at a middle school in Mesquite, Texas has sparked widespread outrage. The video, taken on a student’s cell phone camera, shows the cop, who the students call Officer Davis, repeatedly spraying the tiny animal after it began chasing students around Kimbrough Middle School. Shocked students can be heard yelling “no!” and “don’t spray him!” The squirrel can be seen writhing in agony after being sprayed over and over.

Mesquite Police Department Sergeant Wes Talley defended the spraying, claiming the officer was trying to protect students from what he thought may have been a rabid animal. Talley said Officer Davis only resorted to using pepper spray after multiple attempts to scare the critter away failed.

Students also say they saw a school official kick the baby squirrel before the officer arrived, but the school district denies this ever happened.

Fox 5 New York reports that the squirrel was released back into the wild after being treated at a local animal control shelter.

Some cops do, indeed, use both pepper spray and tasers as though they are toys. Those cops are bullies and idiots. However, if the squirrel was chasing kids it could be considered “potentially” rabid … and rabies could be lethal if a student had been bitten. Thus, as horrible as it was, this officer may have been making the rational choice at the time. Do I enjoy baby squirrels getting pepper sprayed? No. But the cop may have been doing something from what he sincerely believed to be the best interest of the people he was trying to protect. Normally I agree completely with your Douche choices, but I feel compelled to offer an alternative argument in this case.

I debated whether or not to make this guy my daily douche, and I may have to retract this post one day. I just figured there was a more humane way to ward off a baby squirrel… it is, after all, just a baby squirrel. On the other hand, I’ve never run afoul of a rabid squirrel before…
