Arizona Teen Charged $2,000 for Blood Drops on Sidewalk
If you ever find yourself in Peoria, Arizona, be sure not to bleed in public. Taylor Petz learned the hard way–his family was billed more than $2,000 for a few drops of his blood.
According to 3 On Your Side, Petz, a Peoria teenager, accidentally stabbed himself in the leg with a steak knife. While waiting for an ambulance to arrive at his home, Taylor went outside. He didn’t even need stitches, but several small drops of blood from his wound fell to the street and sidewalk. Those tiny drops landed the Petz family a $2,028.58 bill from the city. Incredibly, it turns out the city prosecutor’s office hired a bio-hazard crew from Tucson, more than two hours away, to clean up the blood.
After 3 On Your Side’s Gary Harper ran a piece about the bizarre blood bill, Peoria prosecutor Steve Kemp reduced the charge to $1,200. Still, Taylor’s mother Jennifer Petz doesn’t believe she should have to pay one single cent. “I don’t think that as a tax paying resident we should have to pay this bill, especially this amount of money,” she told 3 On Your Side. “I’m just very sad that this is how the city treats its residents. I am disappointed that they just didn’t drop the entire bill because I do feel like it is something that people aren’t aware of and if you do have an accident and you bleed on the street you are charged for it thousands of dollars!”
UPDATE: The city of Peoria has dropped the bill, deciding the family isn’t responsible for paying:
