Offshore Oil Drilling Company Responsible for Deepwater Horizon Disaster Giving Top Execs Bonuses for “Best Safety Year”
Transocean, the offshore oil drilling firm responsible for running the Deepwater Horizon rig that exploded last year and caused the worst environmental disaster in the history of the United States, has given its top executives bonuses for the “best year” for safety in company history, the BBC reports.
Transocean, along with BP and Halliburton, are responsible for the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion, which killed 11 workers. Nine of them worked for Transocean. Millions of gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf, devastating the coastlines of four states and eviscerating the fishing and tourism industries. Much of the Gulf, which was also slammed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, may never fully recover. President Barack Obama called the disaster America’s environmental 9/11.
The President’s commission on the Deepwater Horizon disaster found that cost-cutting was to blame for the deadly rig explosion, with Transocean, BP and Halliburton sharing direct blame.
Still, Transocean paid out massive bonuses to executives, calling 2010 the company’s best-ever year for safety. “Notwithstanding the tragic loss of life in the Gulf of Mexico, we achieved an exemplary statistical safety record as measured by our total recordable incident rate and total potential severity rate,” Transocean’s annual report says. “As measured by these standards, we recorded the best year in safety performance in our company’s history, which is a reflection on our commitment to achieving an incident-free environment, all the time, everywhere.”
