Florida Church Burns Koran

A church in Gainesville, Florida has burned a copy of the Koran following a trial of the Islamic holy book. According to Agence France-Presse, the spectacle was carried out by pastor Wayne Sapp under the supervision of Terry Jones, the notorious church leader who canceled a planned Koran burning late last year following widespread outrage and an admonition from US authorities that his action could endanger the lives of American troops fighting in Muslim countries.

Sunday’s event, dubbed “International Judge the Koran Day,” drew around 30 spectators. The Koran was given a “trial,” the “jury” deliberated for about eight minutes, and a guilty verdict was delivered. Apparently this “trial” was rigged, because the Koran had already been soaking in kerosene for an hour. Jones opined that the Koran couldn’t have a real trial without real punishment, and so it was that Pastor Sapp torched the book with a barbecue lighter. The Koran burned for about 10 minutes; some in the audience posed for photos.

Jones supporter Jadwiga Schatz said she attended the event because of the growing “threat” of Islam in Europe, half a world away from Florida. “These people (Muslims), for me, are like monsters,” she opined. “I hate these people.”

Jones called the burning a success. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said.

Jones and his ilk despise the Koran and Islam, which they say are “of the devil,” because of the violence espoused in the holy book’s pages. They point to verses such as “kill the disbelievers wherever you find them” and Islamic jurisprudence prescribing severe punishments such as stoning for adulterers as proof of how barbaric Islam is. But to paraphrase the Christian bible that Jones and his Islam-hating brethren hold so dear, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”Apparently, Pastor Jones doesn’t know his bible very well. Here are some scriptural passages that would make the most fanatical Taliban cleric proud:

Death by stoning, punishment for disobeying your parents:

“If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother… then his father and his mother lay hold of him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city… and they shall say unto the elders of his city: this our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die.(Deuteronomy 21)

Death by stoning for being an infidel:

“If they brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods… thou shalt not consent unto him… neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death… and thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy god.” (Deuteronomy 13)

Death by stoning for psychics:

“A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.” (Leviticus 20)

Death by stoning for adulterers, a punishment which, by the way, is NOT in the Koran:

“If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto a husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her, then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die.” (Deuteronomy 22)

Slavery as punishment for female rape victims (while the rapist gets off with a fine and a new wife):

“If a man meets a virgin who is not engaged, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are caught in the act, the man who lay with her shall give fifty shekels of silver to the young woman’s father, and she shall become his wife. Because he violated her he shall not be permitted to divorce her as long as he lives.” (Deuteronomy 22)

Murder, rape and plunder of women, children, infants and unborn babies:

“Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.” (Numbers 31)

“Then Menahem smote Tiphsah, and all that were therein, and the coasts thereof from Tirzah: because they opened not to him, therefore he smote it; and all the women therein that were with child he ripped up.” (Kings 15)

“Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against the rocks.” (Psalms 137)

“And to the other he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark… And he said unto them, defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city.” (Ezekial 9)

“Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her god: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.” (Hosea 13)

There are literally hundreds of such abhorrent passages in the Christian bible, prescribing horrific punishments, often death, for offenses as varied as homosexuality, eating shellfish and speaking to a woman who is menstruating. But nobody in this country is burning bibles. Nobody in America is spewing hate speech about how evil Christianity is. The Koran-burning folks down in Florida, however, are too ignorant to realize that in this country, they are the closest thing to the Taliban we’ve got.

    Please let it be known that Jesus did not tell us to stone anyone, rape anyone, hurt children, etc. Christians believe that Jesus abolished the law and put us under his grace. All of the above quotes in this article are from the Old Testament(when the Jews were under the law), but are indeed in the Bible.

    Please do not take this as me saying what the people did in Florida was right. I just like to defend my religion when someone presents it in what I believe is a misleading fashion.

    As for the koran or bible, burn either, who cares. Just paper, just books. They can be replaced.

    I could care less that they burned the koran. If they’d thrown a flag on it I wouldn’t have cared either. It’s just symbolic matter: there’s no inherent meaning. Human life matters, and so the killers that attacked the UN workers are evil.

    But your main point, that no one in the USA is hateful towards Christians, well that’s BS.

    It is very apparent that the author of this article is quite ignorant of his facts. The Author of the Bible says, “thou shalt not kill”. But this man takes passages from the Bible that “speak of killing” and twists it to mean that The Author of this Greatest Book ever is in favor of Killing. Then we must assume every headline in all papers ever written where they speak of killing must be in favor of killing.

    No wonder this world is going insane. Your article shows pure insanity in your attempt to negate what is happening before you very eyes. The poor zealot in Florida fires up a book, and you cry out in anguish. Let the Islamic zealot fire up people or cut their throats with a knife and you say nothing about it. Let the liberal homosexual soak a crucifix in a jar of urine and you call it art.

    What would happen if someone soaked a statue of Muhammed in a jar of urine? The world would be set on fire. I do not condone what either side did, but at least both sides are taking a stand for something. You my friend are so politically correct, so lukewarm that God will spew you from His mouth.

    Oh, but you do not believe in God. It matters not what you believe my friend, you will be judged at the white throne regardless of whether you believe God exists or not. “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” YOu my friend are a fool.

      We do not favor any one religion over the other, we despise them all equally for the ignorance and intolerance they preach. Just yesterday we posted a story about how the Florida Koran burning led to 10 UN workers being killed by a Muslim mob in Afghanistan. And no, we didn’t actually blame the Koran burning for the killings, we eviscerated the intolerance of the killers and even pointed out that despite their incredible ignorance, Christian fundamentalists don’t commit mass-murder over the burning of a book. Don’t feel like we’re picking on your religion– we pick on ALL of them, or at least the ones that believe they are superior to others. And a crucifix soaked in urine may very well be great art… just like the woodcut illustrations in a 14th century Bible can also be great art. You are very correct to point out that Muslims would chop heads if a statue of Mohamed was soaked in a jar of urine, yet you were off on the statue bit since Islam forbids the depiction of the prophet Mohamed and there certainly would never be a statue of him.

    The difference is Christians and Jews don’t do it today. Muslims still do. These old testament passages are nullified by the NT of peace. Muslims have nothing new to work with but all the hate in the Koran…

    i think the pastor has every right to do as he pleases. the islamic rule is if you dont believe wat they do, then, we will kill you. If an islam believer says to me, “i’m gonna kill you if you burn this book”, i’m gonna dare him to deliver his promise. islam is a control false religion. if you dont do wat they say , believe wat they say, then you die. HOW IS THIS RIGHT. I support the pastor in wat he did. they or anyone else will not intimidate me to do anything. as the pastor say’s “BRING IT ON” and i agree,

      How brave of the pastor to burn the book here where he is safe so that others may die for his actions – knowing as he must have that his publicity-stunt was going to endanger US Soldiers and innocent workers makes him complicit in murder and a traitor to boot in my eyes. “BRING IT ON” from such a safe distance is a typical Blowhard suggestion.

    Brian, you said it right, that goes for everyone, christian, muslim, buddist. it doesnt matter wat we think or say, its wat the bible says. and Jesus is the only way, again, correct in wat u said. Jesus eliminated all the old testiment when he died.

    people dont realize that in the begining, muslims had over 500 different gods.
    muhammad saw the problem with that and narrowed the gods they serve. basically, they put all the gods on a turn table, spun the wheel and it stopped on ala. this is how ala became a god to them, there is only one God and one Saviour Jesus. Christianity can and has been proven true, and islam can and will be proven false

      And how, exactly, has Christianity proven to be true? How will Islam be proven false? Is Christianity the “One True Religion”? If so, does that make it superior to other religions? Are Christians, therefore, superior people to Muslims or those who follow any other religion? If so, how lucky YOU are that you just so happened to be born into the “One True Religion!” !!!

    The pastor can do whatever he wants but he shouldn’t be disrespectful to other religions. Couldn’t he have just kept his anti-Islamic thoughts and beliefs to himself instead of going off and burning the Koran?And seriously what the fuck is up with the hate going around it’s not gonna make anything better its only gonna make it worse. And it’s totally wrong to pigeon-hole Muslims as terrorists each and every Muslim is an individual and the least you can do is show them a little respect I’m sure everyone is capable of that.The US makes a huge deal of the 9/11 take a look at the people in Iraq or Palestine they’re practically going through hell!
    Screw whoever is closed minded in this messed up world that worsens day by day.
