‘Douche du Jour’: California Councilwoman Advocates Murdering Muslims at Islamic Charity Fundraiser

When several hundred people got together in the southern California city of Yorba Linda to protest a harmless fundraiser hosted by a prominent Muslim group last month, a handful of elected officials were present to give their blessing to the Islamophobic gathering. It didn’t matter to them that the fundraiser, organized by the local chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), helped support a local women’s shelter and homeless services. All the protesters saw were a bunch of terrorists. According to the Orange County Register, they harassed Muslim families as they entered the Yorba Linda Community Center, shouting “Go back home!” and asking some of the men if they beat up their wives. There were also the typical chants of “USA! USA!”, that mindless favorite of many right-wing “patriots.”

Instead of condemning this despicably racist behavior, local and national political leaders positively encouraged it. “I’m proud of you,” praised Rep. Gary Miller, a Republican US Congressman. “I’m proud of what you’re doing.” His congressional colleague and fellow Republican Ed Royce said he thought that multiculturalism “has paralyzed too many of our citizens to make the critical judgment we need to make to prosper as a society.”

But most shocking of all were comments from Villa Park councilwoman Deborah Pauly, also a Republican, who spoke next to the Congressmen: “Let me tell you what’s going on over there right now,” she said, referring to the Islamic fundraiser. “Make no bones about it, that is pure, unadulterated evil. I don’t even care, I don’t even care if you think I’m crazy anymore. Because I have, I have a beautiful daughter. I have a wonderful 19 year old son who is a United States Marine. As a matter of fact, I know quite a few marines who will be willing to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise.”

Yes, an elected official in America in the year 2011 is advocating the murder of Muslim-Americans. The fundraiser attendees were not terrorists. Yes, the two keynote speakers at the event have made what can be considered anti-American statements in the past. One of them, Imam Siraj Wahhaj, was named along with 169 others as a co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, but he was never charged with any crime and denies involvement in the terrorist attack. Amir Abdel Malik Ali, the other keynote speaker, has expressed support for the Iranian-backed Palestinian group Hamas, which the United States and Israel consider a terrorist organization. Hamas fights for the liberation of the Palestinian people from more than 60 years of Israeli occupation, humiliation and terrorism. More than 750,000 Palestinians were violently expelled from their homeland during the Jewish state’s founding in 1948. They have not been allowed to return.
