Update: Netflix to Subtitle 80% of Streaming Videos by Year’s End
Two months ago, guest blogger Matt Rafat of Got Shares? asked if Netflix was ignoring the hearing impaired. While Rafat loved the innovative company’s wide selection of available titles and movie recommendations, he decried the glaring absence of subtitles on all but a handful of those films and shows.
Netflix says about 30% of the titles available as streaming video now contain subtitles. Even better, the company says that by the end of this year as much as 80% of its video library will stream with subtitles, a very welcome development for the hearing impaired and others, like treadmill users or those whose first language is not English.
Here’s a list of all Netflix titles that are currently subtitle-encoded. Netflix subtitles are supported on PCs and Macs, Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3, GoogleTV, and the Boxee Box. You’ll have to wait until later this year for subtitles on Xbox 360 and Roku.
