Canadian Pop Sensation Justin Bieber Slams US Health Care System
The reactionary right is about to have themselves a brand new whipping boy. That’s because international pop superstar Justin Bieber, who has two strikes against him already for being Canadian, has spoken some rather harsh truths about the difference in health care north and south of the border. Bieber told Rolling Stone that he would never become a US citizen because of our health care system. “You guys [Americans] are evil, Canada’s the best country in the world,” the Grammy-nominated artist joked. But Bieber wasn’t at all joking when he said that “We [Canadians] go to the doctor and we don’t need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you’re broke because of medical bills. My [American] bodyguard’s baby was premature, and now he has to pay for it. In Canada, if your baby’s premature, he stays in the hospital as long as he needs to, and then you go home.”
It looks like the 16-year-old Bieber has a better grasp of the enormous importance of universal healthcare than many right-wing reactionaries here on the sorry side of the border. Sorry because we’re the only country in the industrialized world without universal, single-payer, government-run healthcare. Perhaps that’s why the United States has fallen to 49th place globally in life expectancy. We’re down there with Albania, folks. But try telling Sarah Palin or John Boehner any of that, or even President Obama, who wussed out of the public option in order to guarantee the success of his own anemic “reform” bill.
Meanwhile, as tens of thousands of Americans die each and every year simply because they cannot afford health insurance, and many more lose their life savings, their homes– their very futures– because of the astronomical cost of health care, Canadians live longer, healthier and infinitely less expensive lives because they’re covered, from the crib to the crypt, by their nation’s single-payer, universal health care system. And forget all the bullshit you’ve heard spewed by Sarah Palin and her ilk about death panels and sub-standard medical care in countries with “socialized” healthcare: nearly all Canadians support their system and want to make it even more “socialized.” And in a national poll to select the “greatest Canadian” of all time, our neighbors to the north chose none other than Tommy Douglas, the former socialist premier from Saskatchewan known best as the father of Canada’s national health care system.
