‘Douche du Jour’: Kansas Lawmaker Can Tell Illegal Immigrants by their “Olive Complexion”
Kansas state representative Connie O’Brien, a Republican, has got a dubious gift. She claims she can tell whether someone is in the United States illegally simply by observing the color of their skin. Really.
A week ago, the Kansas House Federal and State Committee met to discuss repealing the long-standing practice of charging the children of undocumented immigrants who reside in the state in-state college tuition. According to ThinkProgress.org, Rep. O’Brien spoke in favor of repeal. She told the story of how her son, despite being born in Kansas, did not qualify for financial aid, while a female student who looked “illegal” was in line to receive aid. Here’s O’Brien in her own words:
“My son who’s a Kansas resident, born here, raised here, didn’t qualify for any financial aid. Yet this girl was going to get financial aid. My son was kinda upset about it because he works and pays for his own schooling and his books and everything and he didn’t think that was fair. We didn’t ask the girl what nationality she was, we didn’t think that was proper. But we could tell by looking at her that she was not originally from this country.”
Fellow committee member Rep. Sean Gatewood, a Democrat, then asked O’Brien how she could tell the girl was “illegal.”
“Well,” replied O’Brien, “she wasn’t black, she wasn’t Asian, and she had the olive complexion.”
She had “the olive complexion.” Her, and 48,000,000 American citizens of Hispanic origin. Congratulations, Connie O’Brien, you’re the latest bigoted Republican to earn our Daily Douche “honors.”
