Keith Olbermann to Join Current TV
Less than a month after he suddenly left MSNBC, liberal pundit Keith Olbermann has announced that he will join Al Gore’s Current TV. According to the New York Times, not only will Olbermann host a prime-time program and become the chief of news at Current TV, he’ll also receive an equity stake in the company.
“We are delighted to provide Keith with the independent platform and freedom that Current can, and does uniquely offer,” Current TV founder and former US vice president Al Gore said in a statement.
Olbermann and Current TV seem to be a perfect match. Both are left-leaning and somewhat informal, appealing to a younger audience than more traditional news networks. The channel, founded in 2005, has run into tough times in recent years, laying off 20% of its staff in 2009. It is hoped that Olbermann’s arrival will boost its flagging fortunes.
