‘Douche du Jour’: Priest Condemns Homosexuals at Funeral of Slain Ugandan Gay Rights Icon
If hell existed, there would be a special place in it for people like Thomas Musoke.
The Ugandan Anglican priest presided over the funeral for slain gay rights activist David Kato, who was savagely bludgeoned to death in his home Wednesday. Addressing the hundreds of mourners who gathered to pay their respects to one of the leading gay rights activists in one of the most hostile countries for gays on the planet, Musoke shocked the congregation when he declared: “You must repent. Even the animals know the difference between a male and a female.” He then warned them they would share the fate of the ancient residents of Sodom and Gomorrah, the biblical cities that were destroyed by “god” for their wickedness in Christian mythology.
According to the BBC, gay rights activists in the congregation “stormed the pulpit” and police escorted the priest away. The sermon was finished on a decidedly friendlier note by an excommunicated, pro-gay priest.
Kato’s death came a year after a local newspaper outed him as a homosexual. His photo, as well as those of a hundred of Uganda’s “top homos”, appeared next to the headline HANG THEM, THEY ARE AFTER OUR KIDS! Kato and his gay rights organization Sexual Minorities Uganda (Smug) started receiving death threats after his name, photograph and address were published in the paper last year.
Police have arrested one suspect and are searching for another in connection with Kato’s murder. They say that they believe he was killed during a robbery, not because of his sexuality. There have been many “iron-bar killings” in his Mukono neighborhood lately that are similar to the Kato murder.
Meanwhile, homosexuality remains a crime in Uganda, punishable by up to 14 years in prison. A member of parliament even tried to introduce the death penalty as a punishment for anyone with the misfortune of being born gay in Uganda.
It is clearly no country for gay men.
