Sordid Details of Berlusconi’s Orgies Stoke Flames of Italian Sex Scandal
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi allegedly lodged prostitutes in rent-free luxury apartments, hosted wild orgies with dozens of prostitutes in one of his palatial homes, and had an affair with an underage Moroccan belly dancer.
According to Agence France-Presse, Milano prosecutors today unveiled a document detailing evidence that “a significant number of young girls prostituted themselves with Silvio Berlusconi in his residences in exchange for sums of money.” Magistrates have now opened an inquiry into Berlusconi’s rampant libertinage. The proceedings have infuriated the Catholic Church, an essential ally of the prime minister’s center-right government, and embarrassed this nation which already has somewhat of an international reputation for its hot-blooded culture.
Prosecutors have informed the public that they have wire-tapped conversations that reveal sordid details of debaucherous soirees, called “bunga bunga parties,” hosted by Berlusconi at his residence near Milano. Britain’s Telegraph quotes police intelligence officer Carlo Ferrigno as saying “there were orgies in there… they were all drinking, half undressed. By the end… the girls had no bras on and were wearing only… tight knickers.”
Ferrigno identified one of the participants as 25-year-old Nicole Minetti, a half-British former showgirl who Berlusconi propelled into politics.
“She had her breasts out and she was kissing Berlusconi continuously, what a whorehouse,” he said.
Topless women dressed in nurse and police costumes allegedly stripped for the prime minister and his friends, two of whom are under investigation for complicity in prostitution. There were as many as 28 young women at these alleged orgies.
Having sex with prostitutes is not a crime in Italy, but having sex with an underage girl is. Berlusconi’s own government made it a crime in 2006.
The 74-year-old Berlusconi, who is also Italy’s richest man, allegedly carried on an affair with a 16-year-old Moroccan belly dancer nicknamed “Ruby the Heart Stealer.” Her real name is Karima El-Mahroug, and she claims the prime minister gifted her an Audi, a diamond necklace and €7,000 ($9,370), but that they did not have sex. Berlusconi also denies any sexual relationship with the girl. She allegedly asked him for €5 million ($6,693,000) compensation for ruining her reputation. The scandal has been dubbed “Rubygate” by the Italian press.
These revelations are shocking even Italians, who know their notoriously lecherous leader is prone to such scandals. Opposition politicians are trying to take full advantage of Berlusconi’s latest mess.
“What has emerged from this investigation is worse than Dante’s Inferno,” said Leoluca Orlando of the Italy of Values party. “Compared to Berlusconi, Caligula was a prude,” concurred Massimo Donadi, also of Italy of Values. They’re both wildly exaggerating. Caligula, a Roman Emperor, allegedly once forced Senators’ wives to toil as prostitutes in an imperial bordello as a way to fund Rome’s ever-expanding empire.
Still, the scandals are threatening to end Berlusconi’s government. The three-time prime minister says he won’t resign, however. “What, are you all mad?” he said when asked if he would step down. “I’m absolutely calm, I’m enjoying myself.”
Perhaps a little too much.
