9-Year-Old Girl Murdered in Arizona Shooting Rampage Born September 11, 2001
Among the six people shot dead by gunman Jared Loughner at a Tucson political event hosted by US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was Christina-Taylor Green, a nine-year-old girl born on September 11, 2001.
Her unique birthday earned baby Christina the designation of a “Face of Hope,” one of 50 children born on 9/11 who were featured in Christine Pisera Naman’s book Faces of Hope, Babies Born on 9/11.
But hope turned to tragedy today when little Christina’s life ended in horrific violence.
The Arizona Daily Star describes Christina as an active, athletic girl who enjoyed such diverse pursuits as ballet and baseball. She was the only girl on the baseball team, where she played second base. Her grandfather, Dallas Green, was a former major league pitcher and manager who led the Philadelphia Phillies to a World Series title in 1980. Christina also loved swimming with her older brother Dallas, age 11.
The third grader had a keen interest in politics and had just been elected to her student council. “She was a good speaker. I could have easily seen her as a politician,” John Green, her father, said. Even at her young age, Christina was very aware of the inequality and injustice all around her and told her parents that she wanted to grow up and do something to help people less fortunate than herself.
She also sang in her church choir, where she’d recently received her first Holy Communion.
Christina-Taylor Green was born on a day when men with violence in their hearts indiscriminately murdered innocent people going about their daily business. Today she died under the exact same circumstances. She was far too pure for this brutal world of ours.
