41 Percent of NYC Pregnancies End in Abortion
Two out of every five pregnancies in New York City end in abortion.
ABC New York reports that the New York City Health Department’s most recent statistics on abortions (2009) reveal that 41 percent of all pregnancies are terminated by abortion, with shockingly higher figures among African-American women.
Nearly three out of every five– 59.8 percent– of all New York black pregnancies resulted in an abortion.
Among Hispanics, the city abortion rate was 41.3 percent. One in five white women aborted their fetuses, while slightly more Asian pregnancies– 22.7 percent– ended in abortion.
“If 41 percent of New York babies are aborted, with the percentage even higher in the Bronx and among our African-American babies in the world, it is downright chilling,” New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan told WABC.
Archbishop Dolan lamented the spread of contraception and the more permissive moral atmosphere that he linked to the high abortion rate.
“My word, what have we done the last 30 years. There’s candy bowls on people’s desks with condoms, they’re dropping them from airplanes, yet nothing seems to improve, so they’ve been on the wrong track here,” he told WABC.
While these statistics may be alarming, they actually reflect a drop in the overall abortion rate from 1998, when 46 percent of City pregnancies were terminated.
While Archbishop Dolan stresses the pro-abstinence, anti-abortion, anti-contraception stance of the Catholic Church, Planned Parenthood’s response to the shocking New York abortion rate was markedly different.
“We believe in comprehensive sex education, which by the way does include abstinence, but abstinence by itself has been proven to be ineffective,” a statement from the group said.
