WIKILEAKS RELEASE: Dalai Lama Says Global Warming More Urgent than Tibetan Independence
The Dalai Lama told US diplomats that the international community should focus on climate change rather than on Tibetan politics because the environmental crisis was more urgent, according to US government documents leaked by the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks.
The Tibetan Buddhist leader told US ambassador to India Timothy Roemer that the “political agenda should be sidelined for five to ten years and the international community should shift its focus to climate change on the Tibetan plateau.”
The 75-year-old spiritual leader cited melting glaciers, deforestation and increasingly polluted water from Chinese mining projects as grave concerns that “cannot wait” for solutions. He also criticized Chinese dam construction, saying it displaced thousands of Tibetans and inundated temples and monasteries.
The Dalai Lama also said that there were three poles in danger of melting– the North Pole, the South Pole, and the “glaciers at the ‘pole of Tibet,'” which are the largest ice caps outside the poles.
The leaked cables also reveal that the Dalai Lama desperately appealed for US help during the brutal 2008 Chinese crackdown in Tibet. “Tibet is a dying nation,” he pleaded. “We need America’s help.” No such help was forthcoming, however.
