Pro-Wikileaks “Hacktivists” Launch “Operation Payback”
Wikileaks supporters launched a broad electronic offensive against those they perceive to be against the whistleblower website and its jailed founder Julian Assange. Cyberattacks have been reported against the Swiss group that froze Wikileaks’ bank account, the Swedish prosecutor and another lawyer in that country trying the case against Assange, and MasterCard, which severed ties with Wikileaks yesterday. The all-out cyberwar has been characterized by a series of denial-of-service attacks that overwhelm the targeted sites with more information than they can possibly process, causing debilitating crashes. Support for beleaguered Wikileaks and its jailed founder is swelling, with over 1 million Facebook fans and a tweetstorm of solidarity messages as Julian Assange faces extradition to Sweden where he is wanted for the nebulous crime of “sex by surprise” with two women.
