WIKILEAKS RELEASE: US, Yemen Conspired to Cover Up Civilian Deaths in Missile Strike
The United States and Yemen conspired to cover up the origin and extent of civilian casualties from a December 2009 American missile attack against suspected terrorists, the whistleblower website Wikileaks has revealed.
The attack, which was ordered by President Barack Obama, killed 41 innocent civilians, including 14 women and 21 children, along with 14 alleged members of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda.
US General David Petraeus claimed the strike only killed three civilians. Worse, the United States said that Yemeni forces were responsible for the atrocity and that country’s president willingly played along with the ruse.
A secret diplomatic cable published by Wikileaks confirms this. The cable was sent by Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh to US General David Petraeus, saying his government would “continue saying the bombs are ours, not yours.”
In return for their cooperation, the Yemeni government received a huge increase in American military aid.
