‘Douche du Jour’: Tea Party Leader: Only Property Owners Should be Allowed to Vote

Tea Party Nation president Judson Phillips, who has millions of followers, has suggested that only those Americans who are wealthy enough to own property ought to be allowed to vote.

Phillips made this absurd assertion in his weekly radio address.

“The Founding Fathers originally said, they put certain restrictions on who gets the right to vote. It wasn’t you were just a citizen and you got to vote. Some of the restrictions, you know, you obviously would not think about today. But one of those was you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense, because if you’re a property owner you actually have a vested stake in the community. If you’re not a property owner, you know, I’m sorry but property owners have a little bit more of a vested interest in the community than non-property owners,” he said.

Moral Low Ground feels compelled to remind Phillips and his ilk that when the Founding Fathers restricted voting rights to white, land-owning males– over 200 years ago, women and poor white males obviously could not vote, nor could blacks. As a matter of fact, millions of African-Americans– and they were truly African Americans in those days in a very “fresh off the boat” way– were enslaved, which was perfectly OK with the Founders. If Phillips has his way, more than half of America’s blacks would be disenfranchised, since only about 45% own their own homes.

The America envisioned by Judson Phillips and his Tea Party ilk would probably look a lot more like it did in 1810 than it ought to in 2010. Protections for racial and religious minorities, for women, for homosexuals, even for those who think differently would be eviscerated, as would what little social safety net we’ve now got.

The majority of Tea Party Nation supporters lack the intellectual sophistication to realize that while they mindlessly parrot undying devotion to the principles of liberty, their loyalties and their actions speak volumes about their utter disregard for true freedom. Phillips’ latest shocker only underscores how shockingly un-American the Tea Party Nation really is.
