Music Legend Willie Nelson, Age 77, Arrested for Marijuana Possession in Texas
Country music superstar, author, poet and political activist Willie Nelson was arrested today as he returned to his home state of Texas from a Thanksgiving visit to California.
Nelson’s tour bus was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas where federal agents found 6 ounces (168 grams) of marijuana in the vehicle. It is not known at this time why Border Patrol agents searched Wilson’s bus for drugs.
The legendary musician was booked into the Hudspeth County Jail and released on $2500 bond.
Marijuana has been decriminalized in California, where its use is legal for medicinal purposes. But Texas laws are much harsher. Any possession is a criminal offense and thousands of otherwise law-abiding citizens are jailed each year in the Lone Star State due to its severe drug laws.
